On a muddy path in Jeffrey Park that walkers long avoided, a group of Boy Scouts hiked through, building endurance on the uneven terrain.

The Scouts of Troop 166 were training at the Bexley park in the spring of 2002 for a backpacking expedition at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

But as the Bexley Scouts enjoyed the scenic view of Alum Creek, Alex Kolada began to wonder whether the mud was stopping others from coming to see the beauty.

That gave Kolada an idea –…

Bexley resident John Fenimore has been selected by the Bexley Celebrations Association (BCA) as the city’s 2003 citizen of the year.

As scoutmaster of Troop 166 since 1992, Fenimore frequently has challenged his members and his assistant scoutmasters to be active in the community.

“John exemplifies community service and dedication to service,” said BCA President Cindy Phillips. “He has really partnered with the BCA (an all-volunteer…

If there is one thing that has complicated parents’ decisions on whether or not to allow their kids to join the Boy Scouts, it’s the ban on gay troop leaders, atheists and agnostics.

On Troop 166’s 2000 trip to the Keys, scouts were advised not to wear their uniforms for fear of the attention over the Supreme Court decision upholding the Scouts’ right as a private organization to set entry requirements that include a ban on gay troop…

In a long white hallway in the basement of Bexley United Methodist Church, Troop 166 Scoutmaster John Fenimore shows me the Boy Scout display case. The late 40-something Fenimore points to a handwritten version of his favorite quote by Thornton Wilder:

The test of an adventure is that when you’re in the middle of it, you say to yourself, “Oh, now I’ve got myself into an awful mess; I wish I were sitting quietly at home.” And the sign…

After taking an environmental study trip to the rain forest in Costa Rica a year ago, Adam Beeler knew he wanted to create a natural habitat back home.

What he didn’t know was that his middle-school science teacher had a similar idea.

A year later, they created the Cassingham Wildlife Habitat at Cassingham Elementary School in Bexley.

The wildlife garden was built last weekend with the help of about 40 volunteers. It consists of Ohio native shrubs and sits next…

BEXLEY – Three Bexley High School students who have been scouting together since 1982 have earned the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 166.

As their parents looked on, J. Matthew Zeier, Adam W. Reinker and Richard C. Osborn III were singled out with scouting’s highest award at Bexley United Methodist Church last month, six years after they all joined Cub Scout Pack 166.

As members of Pack 166, each one earned the Arrow of Light, the Cub Scout’s highest award,…
