A Holiday Opportunity for Your Family

We realize this is a busy time of the year, but this opportunity seems particularly worthy of your consideration. We’re not able to take this on as a Troop activity this year, but please feel free to take part as a family. If your Scout take part in the activity, please let us know and we will make sure that he gets credit for the service hours.

Dear Friends,

We hope you had a nice Thanksgiving that was full of fun, family and food!  We are writing to let you know about this year’s blanket project. We think this is the 10th year for the blanket project!   We will be making no-sew blankets at the Dowd Center 33 North Grubb Street on Thursday, December 17th from 5:00 to 6:30 and we could really use your help.

The Dowd Education Center (DEC) is a wonderful part of the Homeless Families Foundation (HFF).  The HFF takes families out of homeless shelters and provides housing, clothing and support for 6 months. During this time, parents and caregivers learn job skills and save enough money to get back on their feet. The DEC is the after school program for the kids.  While at the DEC, the kids do their homework and get involved in activities like scouting. It is a wonderful, fun, friendly place and my family has enjoyed many years of making blankets with these kids.

If you are getting this email, you likely know how this works but just in case you need more information, here are some details. Volunteers from Bexley scouting organizations, Bexley United Methodist Church and people who just know of the project and support it meet at the Dowd Center and sit on the gym floor with our children and children from the Dowd Center and make a no sew blanket (very easy).  The child then takes the blanket with them and they can either keep it or give it to a loved one.  This is a chance to help provide some comfort and joy for others and honestly, for ourselves. You can’t help but feel great when you leave the blanket project.

Here are some ways you can help:

1) Volunteer — we need you and your children to help make blankets on Thursday December 17th.  The time is compressed this year so please be there by 4:45 and ready to crank out blankets with 60 kids (60 kids— can you imagine? That is enough kids to fill 3 classrooms in Bexley). We will be completely wrapped up by 6:30.  You can bring your sports team, your scouting group, your family or your co-workers. We just really encourage you to bring young people because it is a great volunteer activity for them. If you can volunteer, please let me know.

2) Donate to the cause — we think the project will cost about $800 this year. It is about $700 for fleece and then another hundred for gift bags and candy canes. Please make all donations out to Bexley United Methodist Church with “Blanket Project” in the memo line and send those checks to me at 57 S. Cassady Ave. or to the church at 2657 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43209.

Thank you for your past and continued support!

Sincerely,

Emily, Sean and Bode Turner
